You don't have to be well-known to have a successful competition, but it helps. If you have an idea that gets people interested, then it'll work.

but then again, i join every N-related competition I see. and you're never too unknown to make a population. however, you might not get that many joiners. but I'd join, and i'm sure others will. You should just go for it, but read the rules for competitions on the forums.
