MAKE A MAP FOR A YOUNG SUNSET
"To compare these two no doubt august passages, one needs look no farther than the first sentence (and indeed, I didn't). Passage 1 manages to tell you every boring thing you never wanted to know about the Okefenokee Swamp in forty words, while Passage 2 hits you in the face with adjectives.
I forgot to indent the first paragraph so I'm writing this email style.
Passage 1 makes use of very few rhetorical styles, relying on the premise that if you're reading it, you're already interested (ha!). Its main weapon seems to be the "list," shielded perhaps overzealously by the "factoid." The passage is part guide book, part dictionary entry -- a bizarre amalgam of geographic facts and flower descriptions. This contrasts sharply with Passage 2, which reads like a description from Conrad's Heart Of Darkness, although with somewhat different flora and fauna. One impression I got continually was that I would certainly read more travel brochures if they resembled Passage 2 more than Passage 1.
Passage 2's writer approached his subject with the pretentious fervor of a religious zealot, and the syntactical complexity of Kafka. This lucky happening allows his writing, after some consideration, to highly resemble the very Okefenokee Swamp that he speaks of. He mixes concrete information -- acreages, geography, fauna -- with an awed and fearful, but above all vivid, rendering of Jurassic Park.
I wouldn't presume to laud one style over the other, but I believe I can make my argument clear enough by quoting the last four words of each literary sally. Passage 2 ends with, "...like some hellish zoo," a highly evocative turn of phrase, while Passage 1 merely states solemnly, "Alligators are also present."

thanks for playing<3
this is nice, abstract. 4/5
but here's my favorite poem right now:
Though all to ruin fell the world
and were dissolved and backward hurled
unmade into the old abyss,
yet were its making good, for this—
the dusk, the dawn, the earth, the sea—
that Lúthien for a time should be.
Though all to ruin fell the world
and were dissolved and backward hurled
unmade into the old abyss,
yet were its making good, for this—
the dusk, the dawn, the earth, the sea—
that Lúthien for a time should be.
