That's exactly my way (I think the fastest) and I really like the last switch descend to avoid dying on the floor. I think the gauss challenge is interesting as the final, since the map is not really complicated, is actually a map to Highscoring, and I think a final challenge is interesting. In fact (speaking of the ascension with gauss) I have not managed to do it differently, like you, but I think there may be other ways.
