This is understandable, but in the end does not necessarily operate fully "under the statute." Yes, I'm a little outside the box went up to the problem, but do not see anything wrong.

I understand why he was confused

Because this is in no way a maze. Never once did I have to stop and think about which way to go. There was only ever one way. Including the trapdoors further linearised the map.
