sorry nevermore, the dna doesn spontaniously split...
restriction enzymes are used to actually cut it based on specifit base pair sequences...and they move through the gel due to an electrical charges on each end of the plate, one pos, one neg...cuz the phosphate(? im not sure) has a neg charge, so they move toward the pos, and the smaller ones go farther, hence the bands...

DNA, yeah.

Stick the DNA in the gel and charge it, and it will break up into smaller pieces based on size, and those pieces will move along inside the gel. They use it for crimes, comparing peoples' DNA, because everybody's results for electrophoresis will be different.
