Map Data

Description I'm pretty sure this was either one of my own maps or one of maximo's maps. This screams of our shared metanet-esque style. But there are a huge number of both gameplay and aesthetic issues - the theming is all over the place, the tiles contradict with the other tiles used, and there is almost one of each enemy in the map - half of which are poorly placed, the other half of which are irrelevant or only useful in a single, narrow instance of the map.

I would consider this among the worst Legacy maps that we did, and this is a perfect example of the map exhaustion that we were feeling towards the end of these packs - we would spend hours a night, every night on IRC mapping and discussing, tweaking packs, playtesting, and giving feedback on each others' maps. The bounce-blocks are not placed well, there is an unnecessary empty space in the lower-left where the tileset doesn't mesh with the remainder of the map, the circular tiles and the E tiles clash horribly, the mine placement is atrocious, the doors are jarring, the laser and chaingun drones pull off multiple surprise deaths out of nowhere, the linear mine lines are hideous... Yeah, this was just a failed map to begin with. The best that could have come of this would have been the mine / gold design being repurposed into another map, using less doors, and removing the circular tiles and re-purposing those into a separate map as well. Removing the Chaingun and Laser drone and making this a floor guard / thwump map or vice versa. This was likely one of the first maps cut from whichever pack it was mapped for, and it obviously stayed in the Ampersand pack for the duration of the project.

Also, I can see how you'd assume I was uploading all of these at once - I'm doing five a day, and skipping days every here and there, but there's only been 5-10 other maps uploaded over the past couple weeks, so I can see how it would look like I'm uploading all of these at once, haha.

Of the five people who still browse this site, I'm not sure it really matters, and I'd never have done this while the site was active, but I also don't want to spend the next year and a half archiving these maps, so I'm basically just trying to get through them as quickly as possible while still providing other people who still map and submit some chance for their maps to be seen. But I'm also trying to offset this by making sure to vote on - and comment on, if necessary - every other map that gets uploaded during this time.

Moreover, though, all of the 'bad' elements that I speak of aren't necessarily objectively bad - the map is still fun, but all of the issues that I listed are either technical or aesthetic, and the aesthetic issues are simple anti-metanet and anti-legacy. The technical issues are just things that could be improved - the map is okay, but from the standpoint of high-end episodic mapmaking, none of these maps were meant to stand on their own merit - and our style was heavily skewed towards consistency in look and feel, and this kind of betrayed all of this.

In either case, good to see you! Hope all is well.

haha I don't know, I had fun playing this. I don't really agree with any of the points you made about why this is supposedly bad

also can I just say it might be a little unfair to other people who want to submit maps to flood a few pages of the hots maps section with a bunch of maps all at once. It's not too active around here these days so it doesn't really matter and I'm not sure why I would care lol, but just putting that out there

anyways, it's funny to see your name again on this site after all these years
